Our Story
We (Genevieve & Rebecca) were introduced by a mutual friend due to our shared passion for social studies education. When we first met in 2023, we experienced an immediate sense of intellectual alignment and shared purpose. What began as animated conversation quickly became intentional planning around how we could better support social studies educators. Although we worked in different grade levels, schools, and cities, we quickly realized that we both held the same core beliefs, visions, and mission, which eventually led us to forming Schema Curriculum & Consulting. |
Why Schema?
Our swirling logo evokes the hurricane-like turbulence of teaching social studies, particularly in today's chaotic sociopolitical climate. The clear center symbolizes the work we do: providing educators with clarifying structures that pull & hold together scattered ideas and resources into a coherent, integrated whole. |
Schemas—such as color palettes or timelines—help us move through dense content without getting too overwhelmed or paralyzed.
Curricular schemas provide just enough conceptual guidance to give educators a sense of coherence without oversimplifying ideas, and clearer pathways to purposeful thinking without constraining or confining.
Our Philosophy
We believe that social studies education plays a powerful role in shaping how young people understand themselves & others, how societies determine which ideas are valued and which are marginalized, and whether we become a world defined by polarization or compromise; apathy or civic engagement; conflict or peace. |
We believe that the challenges facing American social studies education today are not due to teachers' lack of commitment or skill. The struggle stems from the reality that the curricular guidance teachers receive is outdated, disorganized, and misaligned with what research shows is best for children and democracies. |
Our vision is a world in which every child receives a high-quality K-12 social studies education that is intellectually rigorous, coherent, engaging, and empowering.
Our mission is to equip educators with research-based tools, resources, clarity, and confidence needed to deliver the high-quality K-12 social studies education every child deserves.
